"Immersion in the life of the world, a willingness to be inhabited by and to speak for others, including those beyond the realm of the human, these are the practices not just of the bodhisattva but of the writer." --Jane Hirshfield

Fox in the Henhouse

Did Fox steal the idea for a new series from legendary New York writer Pete Hamill? Will Hamill sue? If he does, will he collect a cent? Will the series spur sales of his book, Forever? Is he related to Dorothy Hamill?

I know the answer to at least one of the above questions. I wish Mr. Hamill the best, whatever course he decides to pursue.

I've seen the commercials for this new TV series and I immediately thought of Forever because I just read it a month ago. I really enjoyed this book and the series looks interesting - I had just assumed Hamill was involved with it because it seems so similar. But I'm impressed to see that Hamill is not planning on pursuing any legal action - that says a lot of him as a person living in this world of lawsuits.

It made me want to read forever, I mean read Forever -- I'm glad he's getting press coverage for it, anyway. Well, he probably knows the whole press establishment in NYC.

I can understand not wanting to waste four years in a lawsuit. Who knows if the series will go anywhere, anyway. It depends on how well Fox does it, and they could make a mess of it. My understanding of legal damages is there would have to be some profit for Hamill to collect anything.
